Providence

I’ve been thinking about Providence quite a bit lately. And in doing so, I’ve been overwhelmed (again and again) by God’s protection, care and faithfulness.

What is Providence? Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines it as: a. divine guidance or care b. God, conceived as the power sustaining and guiding human destiny.

When I look back over my life–the choices I’ve made and the paths I could have taken, I’m astounded at how my God has intervened–in big ways and in small, more subtle ways. In things such as where I attended college and where I lived, to ending a relationship that was heading toward marriage. A relationship, that had it continued down that course, I realize now how very unhappy I would have been (as I was pretty unhappy throughout the course of that relationship). And of course His way is better! The things that I didn’t understand or was unsure of–in other words, the things that required I just trust Him in–turned out to be so much better than I could have imagined (Ephesians 3:20)!!

That He cares so deeply for us and loves us so much is comforting and humbling–all at once. God–who knows the number of every hair on my head (and this curly-headed gal looses MANY each day!) and when a sparrow falls from the tree–of COURSE cares about the direction of my life (Matthew 10:29-30). He desires that my life and my actions bring Him glory, and in the meantime He cares for and protects me (Jeremiah 29: 11).

I’m going old-school here, but there’s a song by Michael W. Smith that I grew up listening to. It’s called “Hand of Providence” and it’s from one of his best albums, I 2 Eye. LOVE it still, actually… If you want to hear the song, click here. But for now, here are the lyrics:

“Providence, Providence
See it laying down the cornerstone
The Hand of Providence – it’s evident
For we could never make it on our own
Apportioning the power
Weighing all that it entails
Giving us the fulcrum
And a balance to the scales

Oh, the Hand of Providence
Is guiding us through choices that we make
Oh, the Hand of Providence
Is reaching out to help us on our way

Providence, ever since
Any thesis ever entered man
The Hand of Providence
Has been our best defense
Tho’ his ways are sometimes hard to understand
From the dying of a heartbeat
To another soul reborn
From in between and circling
Our thoughts of love and war

Oh, the Hand of Providence
Is guiding us through choices that we make
Oh, the Hand of Providence
Is reaching out to help us on our way”
