Fun Theory
There’s been a video circulating on Facebook and YouTube recently and when I saw it, I immediately latched onto the idea behind it. Which is that “something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people’s behavior for the better. Be it for yourself, for the environment, or for something entirely different, the only thing that matters is that it’s change for the better”. This is the thought behind The Fun Theory, which is an initiative of Volkswagen.
The video I’m referring to is Piano Stairs
When I first saw it, I did laugh at the novelty of it. But then it really started to make me think: is that really all it takes? Do we just need to inject life with some fun–at least in some circumstances and situations–for behavior to change for the better? I know that for me, if I’m having fun doing something I’m more likely to stick with it. Take for instance, exercise. I’d much rather do something that I enjoy doing (like Zumba or Yoga, or even to listen to some great music while I run), versus just watching the clock while I do what I need to.
Looking at the statistics in this one incident, 66% more people than normal chose the stairs over the escalator once they were turned into Piano Stairs. That’s pretty significant! From this one video, we can’t say if the novelty of the piano stairs will wear off and people will go back to using the escalator again (hopefully not!) But to be able to encourage a little more physical activity out of people is noteworthy!
The Fun Theory initiative has also seen a decrease in speeding and an increase in recycling. All by injecting these daily tasks with a little fun.
So now I’m curious. What other behaviors could we legitimately change, just by injecting them with a little fun or novelty?
I love the fun theory! And yip, I definitely think it applies to most aspects of our lives…
I’m a freelance writer in my spare time, and I know that when I am covering a topic that is even remotely “fun” to me, I write much more freely, much more passionately, much more easily.
Oh, and playing my favorite music low in the background, lighting a few scented candles and taking frequent breaks to give my kids a squeeze also adds to the fun … and the ease!
Great post with great inspiration. Thank you for sharing! 🙂
Agreed. I also do some freelance writing, blogging, and podcasting in my spare time, and when I am doing those things on topics which I love, it makes it all the easier.
I can find myself sitting down to write a post and losing myself for a good 2 hours.
Also, when sitting down in my basement to edit a 45 minute podcast might sound like a total drag, the act of recording the podcast with my friends is what makes it worth while and way more fun.
I’m so glad you stopped by to take a “read”! Fun takes the “grind” and “ugh” feeling out of daily tasks.
Have a good one!

“From this one video, we can’t say if the novelty of the piano stairs will wear off and people will go back to using the escalator again (hopefully not!) ”
I was thinking that as well.
What about removing an escalator altogether? Or is that just mean?
Very interesting post!
It’s not so much as mean as thoughtless. People with physical disabilities may need the escalator. Maybe making the escalator fun for people who need it would be cool, too!
Of course, my dear!
I love this thought! I’ve been thinking about this myself lately too: what could I do to funnify my daily grind…
Oh, please let me know what you come up with! I’d LOVE to know how to funnify laundry… that’s my one “hate-it” task.
🙂
~m
This is the first time I’ve seen the fun theory video. Thanks!
Laundry – ugh. Recently I read a devotional that talked about woman who runs an orphanage in South Africa. She does all of the washing by hand. The author suggested the reader put a quarter in a jar for every load of laundry and then donating it. I’ve been doing it for a week. It doesn’t make laundry any more fun but it makes me more appreciative of what I have.
Hi there!
Thanks for stopping by. I can’t imagine doing all that laundry by hand! I can’t imagine doing all our laundry by hand, let alone that of an entire orphanage…
I love the idea of donating the jar of quarters for every load of laundry done though. Thanks so much!!
Have a great weekend!

I think you can make anything more appealing with a bit of fun. I am more likely to stay in a job if I know that I have fun colleagues whom I can have a laugh and a joke with on my break. I’m more likely to learn if the conference/lesson/lecture I’m in is, active, fun and engaging. I think fun is great for developing as an individual. Sometimes we forget about the simpler things in life. Fun is the way forward!
I completely agree. Fun is often overlooked, unfortunately!
Thank you so much for stopping by!

I think that is so cool…I’de live on those stairs.

Thanks for sharing the video. Loved it. It’s amazing how that many people chose the stairs just because they added sound. People love to do what is fun or at least what they perceive as fun. I love to run because to me it is fun, but so many people think it’s boring. Like you said, then listen to music as you run and it just might make it more fun (I’m a poet and I didn’t even know it).
Loved this post 🙂 I decided to make mail sorting more fun by using the shredder even when I don’t need to… there’s something so satisfying about that sound!
SO funny! I’m the same way… I shred things ALL. THE. TIME. 🙂
Take care!

This is a fun idea. But in reality… I know my kids, and I know my husband. We would spend time…like a lot of time…running up and down those stairs. Like kids in a candy store. Love it!

This video is not so new, but the idea still has a novelty to it.
I believe that the effect will wear off; we humans have a tendency to adapt to change. For example, think of all of the initiatives to eat properly, or even the whole global warming scare. The scare tactic was effective for a while, but later it wore off.
What is necessary is a continuous flow of initiatives, as is utilized in marketing. Sure scaring and fun are two different things, but in the end, they’re both tactics made to persuade the masses to “do good.” I also believe that people work on self interest; if the people have nothing in it for them (apart from a temporary feeling of pleasure, or “fun”), they will not continue to do such.
However, where this CAN succeed is if it is eventually intertwined into society as a whole, to the extent where people do not do “good” for self interest or for “fun,” but as an automated habit, such as brushing of the teeth, washing of the hands, etc.
But the innitiatives to eat properly aren’t fun. “Stop eating those bright sugary twinkies in the attractive packaging! Eat this wilted green leaf instead!”
Ha! SO funny… and so true. Unfortunately.
So glad you stopped by!
~m
Very true. The initiatives for eating right aren’t fun; Michelle Obama’s learning that the hard way.
But let’s face it, with every good that we attempt to do, there is a negative consequence at the other side. I believe that the only way that people will do anything is if there’s something in it for them.
This is great!
I hadn’t heard about it before I read it here and it immediately brought a smile.
I think that the concept is fantastic. I can see how this would inspire generally better behaviour from people.
I am a strong believer in the importance of smiling. I think smiling at strangers is a great Butterfly Effect way of improving the world.
These piano stairs are an example of that. Yes, they have the immediate effect of encouraging more people to use the stairs but I bet they also put people in at least a slightly better mood. From there, people’s behavious and decisions can be positively influenced.
I believe more little gems like this around our streets could be a good step to a happier community.
Thanks for bringing out the fact that people’s mood is positively influenced. I’m SURE that has a continued effect.
So glad you stopped by; thanks for reading!
~m
Brilliant! This is what parents do everyday to get their toddlers to do what they need to do and it’s also the same philosophy I have when working with clients to help them change their addictive behaviors, if recovery is no fun no one will stick with it. Where it gets tricky I think is that fun is subjective and what motivates people is still something we don’t really know very well. Also, anyone can change a behavior because of the novelty but maintaining it, is still a challenge. Great post, great food for thought!
I totally agree that we have to be creative in order to get people to change behaviors…
Glad you stopped by!

We all get into a rut sometimes and it is always fun to reach out and see new ways to look at things in a different way . Loved the video. Great Blog!
Thank you so much!

My experience has been that, in life, it’s ususually slightly harder to do the right thing than it is to do an uncaring thing; and that if I go around shifting the situation slightly so it’s easier to do the right or caring thing, most people prefer to do it and will choose it.
And once they do it once, they like it so much, they often keep doing it ;)…

Hm. How about…school? Shopping? Going to the doctor or dentist? I think fun is often very quickly erased or eliminated in the race to: save time, save money, have kids pass endless tests, appear serious and credible.
I mailed a package today. How dull is that? So I made a label and inked it with a Chrysler building in olive green and a taxi, two fun stamps I bought last weekend in Manhattan. Oh, no — what if this makes me look silly? Unprofessional?
What if I appeared…fun? Now there’s a risk worth taking.
I LOVE your feedback… and totally agree! What’s wrong with being silly? And I will SO take that risk with you–any day of the week!
Thank so much for stopping by!

What a fun theory. I love the little lady in the video who taps her foot ever so slowly on the step. IMO … like driving a car, people should have a license to go on the escalators! Great post. Congrats on Freshly Pressed.
thanks so much! So glad you stopped by!
Have a good one!

Fabulous–a way of learning.
I used to teach, and coming up with novel, fun, ENGAGING ways to teach was always the best way to either change behavior or teach something new.
We could certainly learn from this idea!
Glad you stopped by!

I thought the piano stairs were a great idea and I wish that all stairs were piano stairs. Your kids would not be able to sneak in part curfew and slink up to their room – the piano stairs would catch them.
Congrats on being FP’d.
LOVE that idea–installing these in homes to enforce curfews!
Thanks for stopping by!!

Congratz for being reshly presssed!
Thanks so much!
I would have definitely taken the piano stairs! Hmmm, I’m thinking of some more environmental applications of this….. thanks for bringing it to our attention!!
This is genius! So cool. I would run those stairs all day long and try to play a song 🙂
Me too! Wish we had some of these where I lived, or at least in this country… I’d be right next to you. 🙂
Thanks for reading!
~m
Loved this post!!! I really want to walk up those piano stairs! Now, if I could just find a way to apply fun theory to going to the dentist……
Thanks, and if you ever figure that out please let me know. The dentist might be my LEAST favorite thing to do.
Glad you stopped by!

That is a wonderful idea! Couldn’t watch the video, due to school…
I defintely think that there’s a basis to that theory.Cool post.
I know when I do something that is generally considered insane or novel… I have tons of fun… A lot of times it’s as simple as waving to strangers that you don’t know that can make a day fun.
Many delights!
I totally agree! It makes me think of FRIENDS, when Phoebe runs with her arms flailing (like she did when she was a kid)… Makes me laugh every time, AND it’s actually a TON more fun! 🙂
Thanks for stopping by!
~m
Get the mindset of a kid. Then everything is fun.
That is very cool. I want those stairs in my school. Although, they could get quite annoying after a while. And you’d have all the smart a$$es trying to play whole pieces of music by jumping up and down … could be dangerous.
A little bit of whimsy and fun things like this would make this a better world.
Blessings,
Ava

I have seen this lots to, I wonder if it is still there? Its good to see that people would pick fun over quick and easy. 🙂
I think I would be on those stairs for hours! 🙂
Jessie.
Now that is interesting. If you make something fun, people are more likely to try it. Next up, try to make homework fun for my 7 and 5 year olds.
Give this one a try. Introduce stickers (I know, old trick) plus titles. Green sticker – you are a rookie hero – did your homework in assigned allotment of time and it was mostly correct; red sticker – HERO! – did your homework under the time and it was mostly correct! and so on. It might sound too simplistic for an adult (although adults fall for “prizes” like this too) but a kid would most definitely have fun. Accumulated stickers might lead to a bigger reward once a week. It does not have to be anything material – piggy-back riding, making cookies with daddy, well, you know what your kids always want to do and you never have time for 🙂 I would not promise to watch their favorites with them, some of cartoons are too torturous for adult ears. I hope it will help a bit!
This is the way children approach life, making fun out of almost everything. I can see my children imagining the stairs are piano keys even if they are just plain stairs. Often, we make errands more fun by pretending we are going in the rocket ship (the minivan) to various planets. It’s natural for children, but we tend to forget that as we grow older. I think we can regain that, even without anyone else doing it for us. Why shouldn’t plain old stairs be piano keys?
I totally agree that we can regain this as we grow older, but we may need to be reminded. I think parents and teachers may be more readily inclined toward this, simply because they’re with children more and so have more reason to make daily tasks fun. But what’s the harm in having fun? I know I’d LOVE to infuse my life with more humor and fun…
Glad you stopped by!! Thanks so much!
~m
The cost of the piano stairs will be paid by the decreased cost of health care.Better mood, new experience, positive emotions, shared moment of “what is it? let’s try this!” – priceless!
It does look like tons of fun!
Yes, I do think you may be right on there… Guess we should start implementing this initiative everywhere and see how it goes!
Glad you stopped by!
~m
Yes, you are so right! Anything that is fun will be so much easier to tackle. We should all have the “piano keys” on our stairways! It’s all about perspective and how you look at it—a drab, gray, cement staircase, or one with beautifully-painted piano keys…well, that’s a no-brainer! I’ll take the piano keys, one step at a time, or maybe even a skip or two! (no pun intended!)
🙂 Love what you say here… It IS a no-brainer! And it is so about our perspective. We should try to inject things with a little fun and humor on our own, if they’re not made to be fun for us by someone else.
Thanks for stopping by today!
~m

I actually saw this video a while ago, and I was amazed at how much “fun” in the simple things could change a person’s attitude! For those who used the stairs, it was more than just “this looks cool”, they were getting pure enjoyment out of it! This really makes me think about the changes the COULD be made, if only, we inserted a bit of fun and enthusiasm. Good read. (:
http://hersoftlyspokenheart.wordpress.com/
I do subscribe to the fun theory, however once the novelty wears off it is difficult to keep people interested….
I’m a teacher (stuck in the substitute teacher world at the moment…not many jobs to be spoken for…) and I’ve found that doing the normal, potentially mundane activities with a bit of fun thrown in or, heaven forbid, transformed into games makes students SO MUCH more likely to do them and actually learn something! I have decided that although it may be more work to make something fun and engaging (as opposed to, say, giving out a worksheet and insisting on silent work), it is incredibly valuable and it actually makes my day better, too. Happy, engaged students make happy teachers. And fun is at the root of it all.
I used to teach, and could not agree with you more–on all counts!! It absolutely takes more work to make something fun and to engage the students, but the end result (them actually learning something and being able to apply it!) is SO worth it!
SO happy you stopped by!
~m
I’ve seen this video too and I’m glad it keeps getting reposted. Inject some fun into the daily grind and it changes your attitude and makes you smile – at least for a fleeting moment. Fun at work is the next big frontier. I read that when the economy picks up, most workers will be looking for other jobs. That’s unfortunate and even tragic. Perhaps “piano stair” can become a verb like “google” where employees just start building fun experiences – without notice, without permission and without fear. Like a practical joke but much nicer.
Oh! How I LOVE this… Everything from making “piano stair” into a verb to the idea of employees injecting their day-to-day work lives with fun experiences–as if it’s second-nature!
Thanks so much for stopping by! Have a good one!

Life is all about having fun! I think if a healthy dose of fun was injected into more activities, people would not only be more active, they would be happier.

This is really great – I’ve never seen the video before. We need to make life more fun! I agree with the fun theory totally but I think the whole thing has more to do with how we’ve got used to being lazy rather than deserting them because they offer no entertainment, choosing the escalators over stairs being a great example. I mean, how much energy does it really take to lift a leg?
I’m a classical concert pianist, and I think this is really, really cool.
This is so damn cool. I think I remember reading somewhere that this was done by a couple conceptual artists with very little money and a little microprocessor. Either way, it’s a brilliant idea.
If that’s the case, it might make it even more cool!! 🙂
~m
Great post! I agree with the premise that you can promote “good behavior” by making something fun. After all, I try to get my kids to clean their room by turning it into a race, or some sort of game. Works like a charm.
In theory anyway, after a while these good behaviors become habits, and we don’t require these little incentives to do them.
Thanks for sharing!
Yes, I completely agree that these good behaviors eventually become habits that don’t require the incentives. I’m so glad you pointed that out!
Thanks for stopping by to read! 🙂

Never thought about it, but… mind-blogging. Definitely. Injects fun into the most dreary tasks – yes, even laundry.
E.g. Who wears this elephant-size thing? Certainly not me. Is there a circus in town? Why am I doing the clowns’ laundry? Welp, Dobby’s been stealing my socks again. That stain looks kind of like a cloud– that one looks like a turtle. And that one looks like the lasagna we had on Thursday…
Thanks for the food for thought 🙂

Enjoyed your post. Thank you. I agree.
As a journalist/writer, my best creations are about stuff I am passionate about or enjoy.
I work in the fitness industry so the obvious answer for me is: exercise. I can’t tell you how often people come to me looking for advice about running a marathon and start the conversations with: ” I hate running, but . . . ” I advise clients all the time that if they want to make fitness a part of their life, then they have to find a way to make it fun. For some that’s finding a partner to work out with, for others it’s finding a dance class, and for the real crazies it is sliding on a pair of Nikes and hitting the pavement for 26.2.
Great post. Congratulations on FP.
Thanks so much for stopping by and for your kind words!!

It’s so great – and the best thing is that I went to this undergroundstation every Saturday to play piano. Unfortunately is the pianokeys gone from the stair, but they always come up in my mind when I see the actually stair. Lovely!
HOW COOL that you were able to walk/play on these stairs! Sad that they don’t exist anymore though…
Have a fantastic day; I’m glad you stopped by!

For me, that was the first time seeing the video! Love the article and it gave me the first smile of this morning! It was cute watching people of all ages discover the piano stairs!
Articles like these help put good in life. The news and television sometimes puts me in a bad mood when I hear about more deaths and conflict in the world. This is just putting more good in life (and cardio, possibly helping prevent deaths…hmm).
Hope my explanation didn’t sound too confusing.
Anyways, Cheers!

Want a simple way to include the fun in your life?
Carry a small bottle of children’s bubbles in your car. The next time that you’re stuck in a traffic jam, put the car in park, roll down the window and start blowing bubbles out of it….
You’ll not only find that you relax, but you’ll also be giving the gift of relaxation, curiouslity and delight to the people around you.

I like the idea and the theory behind Fun Theory everyone needs to relax and have some fun because to be honest in some areas of the world some adults are just plain boring. Some people actually care what other people think and this inhibits what people do; they’re afraid to be themselves and this is wrong!
People should be allowed to be themselves and thats why I like Born This Way by Lady GaGa, it just tells you to be yourself.

How delightful, thank you for sharing the video. This reminds me of my time in New york, when I took a day in Central Park to walk over to 5th avenue and play at the great toy aficionado’s FAO Schwarz. I was delighted at the opportunity to play chopsticks on their big “Big” piano upstairs. The heart of the child is indeed alive in us all, how nice to be reminded of this every now and then. How often we forget how important and gratifying it is to play.
I have always wanted to visit FAO Schwartz! AND to play and dance on that big piano! So great that you have that memory. 🙂
Thank you for your kind words and for stopping by. I agree that it is SO gratifying to play. We should be intentional about doing it more often!

I love this post, and the stairs! Maybe I need that at home so I’ll run up and down the stairs everyday to get my daily exercise done. I totally believe by having some fun and laughter, people are more willing to listen and follow the rules because they are more relaxed, like recycling and not speeding as you mentioned.
Great point!
And like you, I would LOVE to have these in my home!
